Drugs and Alcohol Substance Misuse Problem
A misuse problem can be identified when you start to go through any sort of difficulty related to using drugs, alcohol- both illicit and licit. The difficulties can be physical, psychological, family, social, Academic, legal, occupational, financial to name a few. Substance Abuse is when your pattern of use leads to significant impairment and /or distress.
The Difference between ‘Abuse and Dependence’ is that the latter involves more symptoms and negative effects then’ Abuse’ and often involves physiological symptoms such as tolerance change or withdrawal symptoms.
Does your continued use of Drugs or Alcohol lead to failures to fulfil major obligations at home and or at work? Example, poor performance, repeated absenteeism, suspensions, Neglect of your children or household responsibilities?
Does your Drug or Alcohol use take you into situations in which it is physically hazardous to do so? Such as Driving or operating machinery whilst under the influence?
Have your Drug and or Alcohol use caused you Legal problems? Such as, substance related crimes, Arrest for disorderly conduct, driving whilst under the influence of drugs/alcohol?
Are you aware that Your Drug and or Alcohol use are causing relationship and other social problems in your life? Example, current interpersonal problems worsened or caused by substance use, marital problems, physical fights?
Have you noticed that your tolerance to drug/Alcohol has increased? i.e. you need more to get the desired affect?
When you try to cut down or try to stop you suffer withdrawal symptoms?
You have noticed that you become pre occupied with getting the substance or using?
There is no single cause of Alcohol/Drug problems/Dependency; these are caused by different Biological, psychological and social or even environmental factors that vary from one person to another.
Substances are often used to release tension, stress, anxiety, to relax to cope with unpleasant feelings, or to escape and some individuals get more accustomed to using their drug of choice to feel normal.
Social influence and social environment in which you may live can influence your behaviour, including substance misuse behaviour. Decisions made to use or not is affected by peer pressure, sometimes peers already using, parents or other role models abusing substances, culture or values from the community can reinforcement social and environmental causes can cause psychological problems.
Alcohol problems may already run in families, or it is thought that some individuals have genetic pre-disposition to develop alcohol problems although no gene has yet been identified.
The likelihood is that it is most likely not to be one but a combination of factors that can cause individuals to have substance Misuse problems. For some people physical factors may be the strongest, whereas for others psychological or social factors may be the strongest.
